A Reflection on Goal 5, from Head of School Mary Rose Guerin and our Faculty and Staff
Each year at Forest Ridge, our Mission Education team and I pick a theme for the upcoming school year. Some years this might be something we hope to embody as a community, while other years it may be something for us to focus on or work towards together. This year our theme is Goal 5 of Sacred Heart education, “Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.” This goal speaks to the heart of our work at Forest Ridge—to nurture independent thinkers who are empowered to make thoughtful decisions and grow into confident and courageous leaders, ready to make a meaningful impact on the world.
Goal 5 emphasizes the balance between guiding students to become self-aware, reflective, and responsible individuals. while also allowing them the freedom to make their own choices, learn from their experiences, and grow through challenges. It’s about fostering an environment where students are encouraged to discover their passions and talents, and where they are empowered to navigate the complexities of life with wisdom and discernment.
This philosophy extends beyond our students. It is the foundation of how we approach leadership within our own faculty and staff. In this vein, I am proud to share that four of our school’s leaders are actively engaged in continued leadership programs:
- Marianne Picha, Director of Middle School is a faculty member in the Emerging Leadership Institute through the Northwest Association of Independent Schools.
- Robin Vincent is a participant in the Emerging Leadership Institute through the Northwest Association of Independent Schools.
- Stephany Fontanone, Director of Upper School is a participant in the Pathways to Leadership Program through the Northwest Association of Independent Schools.
- Meg Koerber, Upper School Learning Support Specialist is a participant in the Aspiring Leaders Program through the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.
These individuals exemplify what it means to embrace personal growth through ongoing learning and professional development. Their participation in these programs is a powerful reflection of Goal 5 in action. It demonstrates that as a community, we are not static, but rather, we are committed to growth at every level—from students to faculty to administration.
Through their continued education, these leaders not only enhance their own leadership skills but also bring back fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to Forest Ridge and their dedication to lifelong learning reinforces the message we impart to our students: that growth is a continuous journey, and that learning is a life-long process. Their commitment serves as a reminder that, at Forest Ridge, personal growth is not just a goal but a shared responsibility that drives our entire community toward excellence and continuous improvement.
