Exploring the Salish Sea: Sixth Graders Dive into Orca Science with Ms. Levin and Jeff Hogan from Killer Whale Tales
Recently, sixth-grade science students engaged in an hands-on exploration of the Salish Sea ecosystem, learning about the challenges faced by the endangered Southern Resident orcas. Through hands-on activities, scientific experiments, and discussions, students gained a deeper understanding of the current factors affecting these Pacific Northwest marine mammals. Ms. Levin and Jeff Hogan from Killer Whale Tales co-presented this curriculum to the 6th grade.
This topic began with students creating large-scale food web models on whiteboards, mapping out the relationships between species within the Salish Sea ecosystem. This exercise helped them visualize the delicate balance necessary for the survival of apex predators like orcas.
Midway through the unit, students participated in a Toxins Lab, where they explored the impact of bioaccumulation in marine food chains. Using hot plates, students melted coconut oil to model how toxins accumulate in orca blubber over time, a crucial factor in the health of these marine mammals.
Later in the unit, students simulated the effects of noise pollution on orcas and their prey, experiencing firsthand how increased underwater noise disrupts hunting and communication. The 6th grade also learned about fish scale data and the diets of Southern Resident orcas.
To conclude the unit on orcas, students synthesized their learning by constructing large-scale whiteboard models that illustrated the various environmental pressures impacting the orca population. This final project tied together lessons on food webs, toxins, noise pollution, and prey, bringing together the interconnected nature of marine ecosystems.
Through this hands-on, experiential approach to learning, students not only deepened their scientific knowledge but also developed a greater appreciation for conservation efforts aimed at protecting the Southern Resident orcas. Thank you to Jeff from Killer Whale Tales for joining the 6th grade over the last month and for sharing your expertise on orca conservation efforts.
