Partnering with Parents

The journey from 5th grade to graduation is full of excitement, joy and growth. It is a tremendous time of learning. Parenting a daughter during the middle and upper school years is a challenging job, especially in today’s 24/7 world.

Our goal is to support you in your parenting journey through community expert advice, relevant conversations, strategies for common parenting challenges and sometimes just a place for parents to talk. You know your daughter and we know adolescent girls—together we make a great team.

Parent Education

Our Parent Ed talks provide parents with a space to hear from educators and experts who are versed in supporting girls to become authentic leaders, agile thinkers and innovative problem solvers. Gain practical skills that will make you feel more confident, connected and engaged as a parent in this virtual series from Forest Ridge School.

From responsible social media use and parenting in a digital world to perfectionism and resilience, our Parent Education series touches on a wide range of topics relevant to raising adolescent girls. These easy-to-access discussions are designed to deliver expert advice, pertinent conversations and helpful strategies on how parents can raise competent girls who work collaboratively, ask questions, and know their purpose.

Why a Sacred Heart Education - An evening with Sr. Diane Roche, RSCJ

Forest Ridge parents, guardians, alums and friends are invited to an evening with Sr. Diane Roche, RSCJ on Tuesday, September 26. The evening will begin in the Sacred Heart Center with light appetizers and refreshments at 5:00 p.m., with Sr. Roche's talk beginning at 5:30. Sr. Roche will share a bit about her own vocation and journey, ways in which the Mission is still thriving today, ways to get involved and stay connected, and answer questions about the impact of a Sacred Heart education. We hope you'll join us for this opportunity to engage with a truly socially aware advocate for justice, peace, and bringing love to the world.

During her visit to Forest Ridge, Sr. Roche will kick off our service learning program in the Upper School and also meet with Middle School students to discuss relevant topics facing the Society of the Sacred Heart and world today. Students in grades 5-12 will also get to enjoy a live interview with Sr. Roche during the school day on Wednesday, as well as interact with her during some of their classes.

Raising Competent and Healthy Teens: The dual goal of love and limits with Dr. Laura Kastner

Join Dr. Laura Kastner, Ph.D. as she discusses the science and strategies behind raising competent and healthy teens through a balance of love and limits.

Dr. Kastner is a clinical professor in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She is the co-author of four books on adolescent development an parenting, numerous published academic articles and many parenting articles. She also has a private practice in which she sees children, couples and families.

Healthy Habits in an Interconnected World with Stefanie Thomas

Parenting in the 24/7 interconnected world presents a myriad of challenges. Stefanie Thomas, victim’s advocate on the Seattle Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, will share her knowledge and advice about helping adolescents develop healthy and safe habits. Stefanie will update us on current trends in internet safety and provide strategies and guidelines for managing adolescents’ digital lives.

Modeling Matters: What Parents Need to Know (and Do) to Decrease Stress, Worry, and Anxiety with Lynn Lyons

The current news about teens and mental health has created warranted concern, but the information can be overwhelming and hard to sort through. Parents need strategies to help their ‘tweens and teens manage their anxiety, moods, and social pressures. Based on current research and over 30 years of clinical experience, Lynn Lyons will talk about the common traps adults fall into and the key adjustments needed to prevent and help mental health challenges in our kids.

Lynn Lyons is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist in Concord, New Hampshire.  She has been in private practice for 30 years specializing in the treatment of anxiety disorders in adults and children.

With a special interest in breaking the generational cycle of worry in families, Lynn is the author/coauthor of several books and articles on anxiety, including Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous & Independent Children, and the companion book for kids, Playing with Anxiety: Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids.  Her latest book for adults and teenagers, The Anxiety Audit was released in October.

Beyond Sticks and Stones: How Youth Navigate Conflict and Bullying with Rosetta Lee

With the heightened awareness of bullying in today's world, it's hard to know how to support our children.  What is the difference between everyday conflict and bullying?  How do boys and girls experience aggression differently?  How do identifiers like sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and socioeconomic status affect aggression?  Learn about different types of aggression and practical tools in responding to conflicts and bullying. 

Rosetta Lee serves as faculty at Seattle Girls’ School and as an outreach specialist, designing trainings for the SGS community as well as externally for schools, nonprofits, government agencies, and businesses.

Since 2004, Rosetta has been a diversity speaker and trainer on a variety of topics, including cross cultural communication, identity development, implicit and unconscious bias, gender and sexuality diversity, facilitation skills, and bullying in schools. She has worked with over 350 K-12 public and independent schools throughout the country, along with over 100 colleges and universities, nonprofits, businesses, and more.

Under Pressure: A Book Conversation with Forest Ridge School Counselors  

Thursday, April 18 | 8:30 a.m. | Sacred Heart Center

Join School Counselors Laura Boismenue and Hannah Moskat for a book discussion of Under Pressure by
Dr. Lisa Damour which examines the experience of stress and anxiety on girls during the teenage years. Specifically, we'll explore Damour's guidance on social comparison, social media, and competition that exists for girls in concert with their peers. Parents are invited to read the book in advance, but it is not a
requirement of joining this Parent Ed talk.
